About the Position:
The Department of Philosophy invites applications from qualified candidates for a preliminary tenure-track appointment in philosophy at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2021.
The areas of expertise for this position are as follows:
• Area of specialization: 19th and 20th century philosophy and/or ethics and political philosophy, with an emphasis on well-being and the good life.
• Areas of competence: applied and social philosophy (for example, environmental ethics, philosophy of race, Indigenous philosophy, philosophy of disability).

combines award-winning teaching with excellence in research. The department’s strengths are in two main areas: moral, social, and political philosophy, and the philosophy of mind,
language, and knowledge. Several members of the department are active researchers in the history of philosophy.
The department has close ties to the Department of Cognitive Science (https://carleton.ca/cognitivescience/) and is the administrative
home of the Ph.D. program in Ethics and Public Affairs website
The position requires a Ph.D. in philosophy, with evidence of research in 19th and 20th century philosophy and/or ethics and political philosophy, as well as demonstrated teaching excellence.
The successful candidate will be responsible for building and teaching a course on Happiness, Well-being and the Good Life with high enrolment potential. Demonstrated aptitude for teaching
courses at the first- and second-year level is required. The department is attempting to fill a gap in 19th and 20th century philosophy and also has teaching needs in the following areas: philosophy
of environment, philosophy of race, post-colonial/de-colonial philosophy, philosophy of disability, and philosophy of art. We are seeking to expand and diversify the intellectual horizons explored in
our courses and programs. The successful candidate will have an emerging focus on issues related to well-being and will make a substantial contribution to the MA program in a supervisory capacity.
Potential for innovative research and teaching methods, as well as engagement in public philosophy and an openness to experiential learning, are assets.
