York University, Department of Philosophy, 1-2 contractually limited appointments

The Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University, invites applications for one or two contractually limited (one-year) appointments at the rank of Sessional Assistant Professor to commence September 1, 2018. The area of specialization may be either Moral, Political, and Legal Philosophy or Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science.

The Department of Philosophy has teaching needs in both areas of specialization mentioned at the undergraduate level. In addition to the undergraduate program in Philosophy, the Department also oversees the undergraduate program in Cognitive Science, and the courses to be taught by the successful candidate(s) are integral to both programs. In the area of Moral, Political, and Legal Philosophy, courses to be taught include: Philosophy of Law (second year); Ethics (third year); and Seminar in Political Philosophy (fourth year). In the area of Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Science, courses to be taught include: Minds, Brains, and Machines (second year); Philosophy of Psychology (third year); and Seminar in Philosophy of Mind (fourth year).

A PhD in Philosophy is required as is evidence of excellence or the promise of excellence, in both teaching and scholarly research. The successful applicant must show that they are capable of teaching courses in one of the two mentioned areas of specialization, at all undergraduate levels. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning is an asset. The appointment will carry a teaching load of three full courses or the equivalent.
