Job Description:
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto Scarborough invites
applications for a tenure-stream appointment in Ancient Philosophy at the rank of
Assistant Professor. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2018.
Candidates must hold a PhD in Philosophy or other relevant field by the date of
appointment, or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have broad research interests and
expertise within the field of ancient philosophy.
The candidate must have an emerging record of scholarly accomplishments and will
provide evidence of excellence in research demonstrated by publications in leading
academic journals and/or academic presses or a research pipeline that is at a high
international level, presentations at significant conferences, and strong letters of
reference by referees of high international standing. The successful candidate will be
expected to conduct innovative research at the highest international level and to
establish an outstanding, externally funded research program.
The candidate must also have a commitment to excellence in teaching. This can be
demonstrated by strong endorsements from referees, teaching accomplishments
highlighted as part of the application, teaching evaluations, and the teaching dossier
submitted as part of the application. The successful candidate must be able to teach a
range of graduate and undergraduate courses in philosophy, although our primary
teaching needs are ancient philosophy. Ability to teach courses in non-western
philosophy will be a positive asset. The successful candidate will engage actively in the
graduate Collaborative Specialization in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at the
University of Toronto.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The University of Toronto Scarborough is a research-intensive institution with an
interdisciplinary commitment, a multicultural student body, and a modern campus. The
University of Toronto has three campuses, St. George, Scarborough, and Mississauga,
each with its own Department of Philosophy offering undergraduate programs. The
Graduate Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto is a tri-campus
department, consisting of the philosophy faculty appointed on all three campuses.
Graduate teaching and supervision typically take place on the St. George campus.
