Research Enhanced Faculty Position in Philosophy of Perception

The Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in the area of Philosophy of Perception. We are seeking applications from candidates with research expertise in philosophy of perception, with a clear emphasis on vision. This position is expected to commence July 1, 2018, or as soon thereafter as possible.

This is a Research Enhanced Faculty position partially funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund VISTA (Vision: Science to Application) program. The successful candidate will engage with, and benefit from, the VISTA program, which focuses on the intersection between biological and computational vision. The VISTA program is supported by a total of $120 million in funding over seven years. The applicant will receive enhanced start-up funding, additional annual research funds, a reduced undergraduate teaching load, and competitive access to general VISTA research and training funds for the duration of the program.

The Department of Philosophy has a strong research group studying the mind from an empirically informed perspective and oversees the undergraduate Cognitive Science Program. The candidate must be willing and able to take a leadership role in the activities and development of this Program. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to apply for membership in York’s internationally renowned Centre for Vision Research, York’s Neuroscience Graduate Diploma Program, as well as other organized research units contributing to the VISTA program.

A PhD in Philosophy is required as is evidence of excellence or the promise of excellence, in both teaching and scholarly research. The successful applicant must show the promise of exemplary scholarship, including the potential to assemble an exemplary publication record, to secure the funding expected of an exceptional emerging scholar, and to achieve international recognition in the field. Applicants should also evince the potential to attract, develop, and retain excellent students and future researchers. The successful applicant will direct courses in Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Cognitive Science, and related areas at all levels, contribute to curricular development in her/his area of specialization, and participate actively in the graduate program. The successful applicant will be eligible for immediate appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning is an asset.
