Assistant Professor of English and the Study of Women & Gender

The Program for the Study of Women and Gender (SWG) and the Department of English Language & Literature at Smith College invite applications for an equally shared joint tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 2017. We seek a scholar working at the intersection of questions of race, gender, and sexuality in literary and/or visual texts in the contemporary United States.

Successful candidates will demonstrate command of key methodological and theoretical perspectives in both gender studies and literary studies. We are particularly interested in candidates who work in women of color feminisms, Native and indigenous studies, Arab American and Latin@/x Studies; comparative work is welcome. Desirable additional fields or areas of strength include critical race theory, queer theory, drama and performance. We expect the successful candidate to have excellent preparation in literary texts from the twentieth century (and after), and interdisciplinary graduate training and teaching experience in women and gender studies. A Ph.D. in a relevant field is expected by the time of appointment.

The new hire would teach two courses each year in SWG ( http://www.smith.edu/swg/) and two in English (http://www.smith.edu/english/). Both programs offer considerable freedom in curricular design. In SWG the successful candidate must be prepared to teach SWG 150, the major’s interdisciplinary, team-taught introductory course. In English, the successful candidate would teach a balance of introductory, intermediate, and advanced seminar level courses.
