We invite applications for the position of Department Head of Women's and Gender Studies at Eastern Michigan University. Founded in 1975, the Department initiated the first minor in Women's Studies in the State of Michigan and remains the state's only university offering a stand-alone Master of Arts in Women's and Gender Studies . The Department currently offers an undergraduate major and minor in Women's and Gender Studies , and plans to launch a new Queer Studies minor in 2013. The department is a model of interdisciplinary collaboration on the EMU campus, with its own dedicated faculty and 30 department members from each of the five colleges - Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health & Human Services, and Technology - and the University Library. Our student body is also diverse in terms of age, gender and gender identity, race and ethnicity, country of origin, and socioeconomic status.

Essential department head duties include providing leadership in sustaining and developing the Women's and Gender Studies Department; supporting faculty teaching, scholarship, and service within a collective bargaining environment; overseeing the formation and execution of department policy; organizing and supervising courses; conducting program assessment; hiring and supervising graduate assistants and lecturers; managing and administering department budget; fundraising and outreach.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have prior administrative experience that includes budget and personnel management, a proven commitment to diversity, understanding of LGBTQ issues, and a record of active participation in program development and execution in a Women's and Gender Studies program or department. The candidate must qualify for tenure at the Associate or Full Professor rank in the Department of Women's and Gender Studies; have a Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree in a related field; and exhibit a strong record of teaching and sustained research and scholarly publication with a focus on women's and/or gender studies.
