Assistant Professor in Philosophy

Rice University’s Department of Philosophy seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a specialization in the history of modern philosophy. Ideally, candidates should have an additional competence in one or more of the following areas: political philosophy, the history of political thought, or feminist or decolonizing approaches to the history of philosophy.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and continue research in their area of expertise. Rice University has a semester-based teaching schedule with a 2-2 teaching load. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research projects and innovative teaching within and beyond Rice’s School of Humanities are plentiful and a high priority. Candidates that are able to demonstrate the inclusion of historically underrepresented perspectives and who bring an additional international and/or cross-cultural perspective to philosophy are especially encouraged to apply.

The department has close working relationships with other departments in the School of Humanities and it is also involved in a range of interdisciplinary programs, including Politics, Law & Social Thought, the Center for the Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, and Medical Humanities.

The deadline for applications is November 14, 2022. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy or related field by July 1, 2023. The teaching and research statements should highlight the candidate’s ability to address cross-cultural, underrepresented, and/or international perspectives in their work.
